RECLAIMING YOUR STRENGTH

When a tooth is lost, the surrounding jawbone can naturally begin to recede or atrophy over time. This often leaves a foundation that is too thin or weak to support a dental implant. Bone grafting is a highly successful solution that allows us to not only replace missing bone but also stimulate your body to grow new, healthy bone in its place.

At Downriver Surgery Center, we view bone grafting as the vital 'blueprint' phase of your restoration. Whether we are preserving the site immediately after an extraction or rebuilding an area affected by gum disease, our goal is to restore the proper height and width of your jaw. This ensures that when you're ready for implants, they will be anchored in a stable, healthy environment that looks and feels completely natural.

A SOLID ROADMAP

A detailed, five-step guide to rebuilding your bone and preparing for a lasting restoration.

01

DIGITAL BONE MAPPING

We use panoramic X-rays and 3D digital scans to assess the exact condition of your jawbone. This allows Dr. Alec to determine the precise volume of bone needed and create a customized plan tailored to your specific anatomical needs.

02

THE COMFORT PHASE

Before we begin, we will sedate you to ensure you are completely relaxed and comfortable throughout the procedure. Our team focuses on creating a quiet, stress-free environment so you can remain at ease while we prepare your foundation.

03

ANCHORING THE FUTURE

Dr. Alec precisely places the grafting material into the areas that need reinforcement. In some cases, a specialized membrane is used to protect the site, encouraging your body to migrate healthy cells to the area and begin the natural growth process.

04

SITE PRESERVATION

To ensure the graft integrates perfectly, we stabilize the area with micro-precision. This protects the height and width of your jaw, preventing further bone loss and ensuring the site is ready to support a permanent dental implant in the coming months.

05

RESTING & RECOVERY

After the successful completion of your procedure, you will rest in your private room until you're ready to head home. To ensure your comfort continues, Dr. Alec will personally call you that evening to check on your progress and answer any questions.

GENTLE INTEGRATION

Healing from a bone graft is a quiet and steady process as your body works to integrate the new material and build a stronger foundation. While you may experience some mild tenderness or swelling for a few days, most patients find the recovery very easy to manage with simple care and rest. Over the following months, the graft will fuse with your existing bone, creating the density required for a successful implant.

FAQ

  • There are several safe and proven options, including your own bone, high-quality donor bone, or synthetic materials. During your consultation, Dr. Alec will determine which material is best suited to your specific needs and long-term goals.

  • Think of it like building a house; an implant needs a thick, sturdy 'soil' to be anchored into. If the bone is too thin, the implant won't be stable. Grafting ensures your implant has enough support to last a lifetime.

  • While the initial procedure is quick, the 'fusion' process typically takes a few months. We monitor your progress with digital scans to ensure the bone is strong and ready before we proceed with the placement of your dental implants.

  • True 'rejection' is extremely rare. Most issues arise from the site being disturbed during early healing. We use highly biocompatible materials and specialized techniques to ensure your body accepts the graft and begins building new bone immediately.

  • Not at all! As long as you are in good general health, bone grafting can be performed successfully at almost any age. It is a common and effective way for seniors to rebuild their jaw strength to qualify for dental implants.

  • Dr. Alec personally calls each patient on the evening of their surgery. He wants to ensure you are comfortable and that you have everything you need for a safe and successful start to your healing journey.
