LISTENING TO YOUR BODY
Oral lesions can present in many forms—from a persistent canker sore to a colorful patch on the cheek or tongue. While many are minor and caused by stress or trauma, any lesion that refuses to heal within two weeks requires a professional evaluation. At Downriver Surgery Center, we specialize in identifying the underlying cause of these changes, whether they are related to viral infections, autoimmune conditions, or more serious health concerns.
Dr. Alec provides a thorough clinical diagnosis to determine if a simple topical treatment will suffice or if a precise surgical excision is necessary. Our goal is to provide you with a definitive answer and a clear path forward, ensuring your oral health is protected with the highest level of surgical expertise.

A PATH TO CLARITY
A precise, five-step journey from initial discovery to definitive diagnosis and healing.
01
EXPERT EVALUATION
Dr. Alec performs a detailed exam of the area, looking at size, color, and texture. We take the time to discuss your symptoms and health history to determine if the lesion is a localized issue or a signal of a broader health concern.
02
THE COMFORT PHASE
If a biopsy or excision is required, we will sedate you to ensure the experience is entirely peaceful. This allows Dr. Alec to perform the procedure with microscopic precision while you remain in a completely relaxed state.
03
SURGICAL RESOLUTION
Dr. Alec carefully removes the affected tissue using a gentle surgical approach. This sample is then sent to a specialized lab for a definitive diagnosis, ensuring we have a clear and accurate understanding of exactly how to manage your health.
04
RESTING IN PLACE
After the successful completion of your procedure, you will rest in your private room until you're ready to head home. We monitor your comfort closely and provide you with specialized rinses and care instructions to promote fast, clean healing.
05
DR. ALEC’S FOLLOW-UP
Dr. Alec will personally call you on the night of your procedure to see how you are feeling. Once your lab results are ready, we will sit down together to review the findings and finalize your long-term care plan.

QUIET HEALING
Recovery from an oral lesion excision is typically very straightforward, as the tissues in the mouth are designed to heal rapidly. For the first few days, you’ll focus on a soft diet and gentle mouth rinses to keep the site clean and undisturbed. Most patients find that any mild tenderness fades quickly, allowing them to return to their normal routine while we wait for the final laboratory confirmation.

FAQ
The 'Two-Week Rule' is our golden standard. If any sore, lump, or colorful patch in your mouth doesn't heal or show significant improvement within 14 days, it's time to schedule a professional evaluation.
Not at all. Since we will sedate you during the procedure, you won't feel anything. Afterward, the area may feel a bit like a small burn or a canker sore, which is easily managed with the care kit we provide.
Causes vary widely—from simple physical trauma and stress to vitamin deficiencies or viral infections like HPV. Our goal during your visit is to identify the specific cause so we can treat the root of the problem, not just the symptom.
Typically, results from the pathology lab take about 7 to 10 business days. As soon as we receive the definitive report, Dr. Alec or our clinical coordinator will call you to discuss the findings and the next steps for your care.
The tissues inside the mouth heal incredibly well and are very resilient. While a small amount of tissue is removed, Dr. Alec uses microscopic suturing techniques to ensure that once healed, the area looks and feels smooth and natural.
Dr. Alec personally calls each patient on the evening of their procedure. Especially with lesions, we want to ensure you feel supported and that any questions you have about your recovery or next steps are answered immediately.
